Lost Pet Prevention

It is extremely important to take preventative measures, which will greatly increase your chances of being reunited with your pet, should he or she be lost. Always be sure your pet has current identification, either with tags, engraved collars, tattoos and/or microchips.

If your pet goes missing, there are a number of helpful steps to take to ensure its safe return.

  1. Call your local animal control agency to report your missing pet.  Animal control offices often pick up stray pets, especially when they are reported by citizens.  It is also a good idea to visit the animal control office to see if your pet is being housed there.
  2. Call your local animal shelter (SPCA, Humane Society) to see if anyone has dropped off your pet.  Again, it is a good idea to go to the shelter in person to see if your pet is being housed there.
  3. Post flyers around your neighborhood and ask neighbors if they have seen your pet.
  4. Place an ad in your local paper, BSVH website, and online lost and found sites (craigslist.org, petamberalert.com, found-pets.org, pets911.com).  Most of these will place both lost and found pet ads for free.  You can also use these same outlets to search for found ads, in case someone has found your pet.
